Curran welcomes further progress of Metro West
The Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) is currently preparing a Railway Order application for Metro West, according to Minister of State John Curran T.D. The proposed orbital line will connect the town of Tallaght, Clondalkin, Liffey Valley and Blanchardstown with Metro North to Swords and the City Centre.
Welcoming these developments, Minister Curran said: “I am delighted to know that Metro West is continuing to progress ahead and be developed under the current economic climate.
As part of the design development along the route, RPA have identified the requirement to design an interchange between Metro West and the Luas Red Line at Belgard. Late last year, two design options were developed, one option on a bridge and the other in an underpass.
RPA published these options in September last year on the Metro West section of RPA website and invited the public to make observations and submissions on the proposed concepts.
Following the feedback, RPA undertook a more detailed design investigation of the two options proposed to identify, in more detail, the design and construction requirements, traffic impacts, costs and visual impacts.
This technical evaluation, has led to the conclusion that the bridge option is the most suitable solution and is the one that will now be progressed to Railway Order application. The results of this evaluation also showed the underpass option to be in excess of 25 times the cost of the bridge option.
“It is welcome news that the preferred option has now been selected by the RPA and they will now progress the design in a way that seeks to reduce or eliminate many of the concerns and issues raised by local residents of the area, said Minister Curran.
“As part of the design progression the RPA will now be considering landscaping and architectural measures to assist in integrating the scheme as best as possible into the surrounding area.
“The RPA are encouraging anyone who has an opinion or suggestion regarding the design of the interchange to contact them by post, phone or email. Local residents should not hesitate to contact them if they have any concerns,” concluded Minister Curran.

“Issues and Challenges in the Recruitment and Selection of Immigrant
Workers in Ireland”
Minister for Integration, John Curran T.D., today welcomed the publication
of the research report entitled “Issues and Challenges in the Recruitment
and Selection of Immigrant Workers in Ireland”. The report, which was part
funded by the Office of the Minister for Integration, takes into account
the experiences of job seekers from a range of minority ethnic groups,
examines their experiences of seeking employment in Ireland and identifies
particular challenges/barriers that they have encountered. The focus of the
research was specifically on Eastern European, Asian/Chinese and African
groups living in Ireland.
The research was commissioned by the Public Appointments Service Employers’
Diversity Network. The Network which comprises a range of public and
private sector employers including An Garda Síochána, the HSE, Dublin Bus
and Hertz Ireland, was formed in 2007 to facilitate the sharing of
information on best practice in diversity, with a particular emphasis on
the development of diversity friendly recruitment and selection systems.
The research which was undertaken by the WRC, Social and Economic
Consultants, highlights the significant barriers facing immigrant job
seekers in Ireland and identifies the need for employers to be more aware
and proactive in ensuring equality of opportunity particularly in the
current labour market.
The Minister stated “It is important that despite the economic downturn we
acknowledge that our economy will continue to attract non–Irish national
workers. The successful integration of migrants into Irish Society is a key
priority of the Government. Labour market participation is a key factor in
this successful integration.”
The research report published today identified some of the key obstacles
that immigrants reported in trying to secure employment such as a lack of
information in relation to the job search process, a perceived preference
amongst employers for Irish experience and references and difficulties in
demonstrating equivalence of qualifications. The report also highlighted
the different views that immigrant job seekers and employers often had in
relation to the selection process and the extent to which it was open and
fair.
The report provides a useful insight and advice for employers seeking to
ensure that their recruitment processes are fair and immigrant friendly.
The Minister added “This research will complement other work which has also
been funded by my Office such as the “Action Strategy for Integrated
Workplaces” and the Irish Management Institute (IMI) BIZLAB on Cultural
Diversity and the BIZLAB Toolkit which provides very practical guidance on
the management of cultural diversity in Ireland’s workplaces.”
